General Tso’s Chicken Recipe

General Tso chicken is very famous dish severed in American Chinese restaurants. its little sweet, sour and spicy in flavor. The dish is named after General Tso Tsung-tang.

Ingredients Of General Tso’s Chicken

Marinade

  • 500 gm. boneless skinless chicken breast, bite size piece
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 tbsp. soya sauce
  • 1 tbsp. white vinegar

For Sauce

  • 1/3 cup chicken stock  [I used chicken cubes]
  • 3 tbsp. tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp. white vinegar
  • 3 tbsp. soya sauce
  • 2 tsp. Worcestershire  sauce
  • 2 tsp. chili garlic sauce
  • 2 tsp. sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds, for garnish
  • Scallions, green parts thinly sliced, for garnish
  • Red capsicum and onion cubes (optional)

For Coating

  • 1 cups cornstarch
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • vegetable oil, for frying

Method Of General Tso’s Chicken

  • For marinade: In a bowl, combine the 1 tbsp. soya sauce, 1 tbsp. vinegar , and the egg whites. Coat the chicken to the marinade mixture and let sit for 30 minutes.
  • For sauce: Combine the chicken stock, tomato paste, sugar, soya sauce,vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, chili garlic sauce, sesame oil, sugar, and the 1 teaspoon of cornstarch. Stir until the sugar and cornstarch are dissolved. Set the sauce aside.
  • For coating: Combine cornstarch, flour, baking soda, salt and pepper until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add the marinated chicken and toss to coat all the chicken.
  • For frying: Heat up the oil in a wok or skillet and when its hot add the chicken in batches and fry until golden brown on the outside and cooked through. Remove the chicken with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  • In another wok add a tablespoon of oil and coat the wok. Add the crushed chili powder and garlic and stir-fry until fragrant.Add capsicum and onion cubes if using and stir about about 2 minutes, pour in the sauce mixture and stir until thickened about 1-2 minutes.
  • Return the chicken to the wok and stir well to coat with sauce. Transfer the chicken to a serving dish. Garnish with white sesame seeds and scallions. Serve with white rice or fried rice.
